You Are What You Eat. Scary Isn't It?

     Why are so many people on the juice and smoothie high? Is there something to it, or is it just because it sounds like a good idea? Well, I’m here to tell you there ARE benefits to it. First, let’s just state the obvious. Juices and smoothies are fast. With the totally insane schedules most of us have on the daily, and the eat-as-you-go attitude we (myself included) constantly embrace, what options are there other than fast food or, the most popular, a sandwich. Besides the convenience, what else do juices and smoothies offer? Lots! Depending on the ingredients being used, they can be full of quick energy and antioxidants. Best of all, you won’t feel tired and sluggish like you most definitely would after downing that bowl of pasta. Woooo! Can’t complain about that!!

     How about the ingredients? There are so many options to choose from; veggies, fruit, and all those fun add-ins like chia seeds and protein powders. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with the huge selection. Let me make it a little simpler for you. Depending on what you’re looking for in that juice or smoothie, it will be easier to figure out what to add for that perfect combination. For right now, I’m going to focus and what many of you can relate to, skin. We all want clear, glowing skin. What goes into our bodies has so much to do with this, whether we realize it or not. You know that saying,  “you are what you eat”…it’s true! The foods we fuel our bodies with, will have a huge impact on our energy levels, hair, skin, nails and over all body functions. Because of this, we need to not just think about what our stomachs want, but rather what our bodies need. So, back to my main point, skin… there are endless combinations to choose from and depending on the ingredients you choose the benefits can include any of the following: increase bone strength, protection against fine lines and wrinkles, improving damaged skin, reducing facial redness, and this just skims the surface. I'll share with y'all one of my favorite and most tempting recipes. Best of all, your stomach and skin will thank you for this one ;)

½ avocado
3 kale leaves
2 hand fulls of spinach
½ cucumber
2-3 stalks of mint
2 pears or green apples
½ lemon (without rind)
1-2 very thin slices of ginger
1 ½ cups water (switch it up with coconut water or your favorite brewed tea)
1 cup ice

How To:

Wash and chop all ingredients. Throw in the blender and blend away!
*Notes- this will make about 3 servings, so feel free to put the extra in the fridge (lasts 1-2 days) or pop it in an ice pop mold and make yourself a frozen treat for later!
