The pillow: a launching pad for your dreams, a place to restore your mind, the one thing that you can come home to every night. And almost 25% of our lives are spent resting against it's plushness. Are we really getting enough sleep though? It is recommended that we as humans commit to at least eight hours of sleep per night, yet those eight hours can be quite difficult to obtain. The trouble is not only falling asleep, but remaining asleep. Sure there are drugs that claim to assist with this process, but do we really want to rely so heavily upon synthetically fabricated substances? Especially when there are healthy, organic and natural alternatives that are perhaps even more potent, not to mention much healthier for you. For all of the migraineurs out there I have a magnificent solution for you, and it is found via the beautiful harmony of lavender and hops. Two beautiful herbs that are going to provide you and your pillow a glorious night of sleep.

For me the answer is always found in the form of a plant. Herbs in particular are a brilliant solution that have been a tried and true resource for centuries. From the Romans to modern times, the reiteration of a sleep pillow has been a staple for the holistic approach to sleep. Science has also backed up this claim with proof that certain plants can actually alleviate mental, emotional and physical stress.

Hops (Humulus lupulus) is most potent in the form of its dried flower bracts. Although slightly pungent by themselves, when mixed with other herbs their effect upon the body is most potent.

One of the most collaborative herbs to harmonize with hops within your pillow is lavender. I like to use the leaves and the flowers. There are many varieties of lavender, but some of the best choices are Lavandula x intermedia, English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and French lavender  (Lavandula dentata)

I love this DIY project and it works so well. I sincerely hope that it works for you as well!
