It is the calm after the storm: the first week of the New Year. It is the time to put away the Christmas lights and break in those new running shoes, make resolutions and start fresh. But like any new habit, new practice, or new goal, setting yourself up for a successful new year takes preparation and planning. Too often, we set goals that aren’t sustainable and the work towards our year long goals fall short, and every new year begins to look and feel a lot like the last.
Whenever I begin something new, I always remind myself that first and foremost, it will not be comfortable. It will be hard. There will be many times I will want to quit, will want to cry, and will want to stop my efforts and continue doing the same things I have been doing all year. So, before beginning anything new this year, remember that for a least at the beginning, whether it is losing 10 pounds, breaking a bad habit, or being more productive, you will feel uncomfortable at least for some time, and you will be tempted to quit. That’s when vision must come in. Before starting a new goal, create a vision board, or hang pictures in your office and your home that will remind you of why you are starting something new.
Last year, I set a goal to be more selfless. I found a beautiful yet simple photo of two hands, one reaching out for the other, that reminded me of this goal. I put it as my desktop background, printed it out for my wall at home, and kept one with me in my wallet. Having a physical object or photo to look at during those uncomfortable time will help your reach your goals in the end.
Lastly, when starting something new, think about longevity. I want this now, but will I want it two, three, five months from now? Choose to work towards goals and accomplishments that are realistic for your future self, whomever you wish that to be.
And of course, whatever you choose to work on this week, this month, or for 2015 in general, I wish you the best of luck, and above all, a happy and prosperous new year.
